Is your child ready for the new school year? The 2017 School year is upon us, and you likely have prepared your child with all of the necessary school supplies and new clothes, but have you prepared their smiles for a successful school year?

To encourage your child to hold a good attendance record this year, you can support their efforts by keeping tooth decay and gum disease from impacting their oral health. Today, our dentists, Dr. Prachi Deore and Dr. Jones, are happy to share some beneficial strategies to help you do just that. Let’s have a look!

— Help your child practice good oral hygiene, every day. As part of their school “supplies”, provide them with the tools to accomplish this goal. Stock up on a soft-bristled toothbrush, a fluoride toothpaste, a dental flossing method you know they enjoy using, an antimicrobial or fluoride mouthwash–and make sure all of these products carry the American Dental Association Seal of Approval on the packaging. This step will ensure that these smile essentials are safe and above all, effective.

— Next on the list is helping your child have a healthy body and the energy to get through the day. Proved their growing bodies, teeth, and gums with the building blocks they require. Start by limiting their sodas and sugary drink intake, and make sure their backpacks contain water for proper hydration throughout the day. Pack their lunches with slices of fresh fruit and vegetables, along with dairy and lean meat to support strong teeth and promote healthy gums.

— To complement their daily oral hygiene efforts, bring them in for bi-annual dental cleanings and checkups with Dr. Prachi Deore or Dr. Jones. Removing tartar and checking for dental issues are crucial to supporting their smiles. In addition, we can give them fluoride treatments or dental sealants as needed.
